The Somerset Historical Society

While I tend to be a city girl, I didn’t know what I could possibly find interesting at an attraction that features reproductions of 1800’s log cabins and details the agricultural equipment of the early settlers to this area.  Again, I was wrong.  I found the museum fascinating.

I never really thought of how the early settlers to this area got here.  Um. they walked!  If you had a cow, you were one of the rich folk because a cow could lug 40 pounds.  There were no stores ladies, you had to carry what you wanted to bring with you. I don’t know why I didn’t realize this, I just didn’t.  While looking at the photos of early settlers wives, you are struck with how unattractive they are.  I would imagine a man looking for a wife back then wasn’t concerned with looks.  I can see them thinking, hmmm, can this woman carry half of what we own, help me build a cabin and kill a pig?

This was my second stay at the Holiday Inn in downtown Johnstown and have enjoyed both stays.  The hotel is easy to locate across from the Johnstown War Memorial.  The lobby is clean and attractively decorated with fresh flowers, seating areas and has a computer for guest usage. And who wouldn’t love a lobby that has a picture of Paul Newman? Check in and out is quick and efficient.

The rooms are average sized and the price for my double bed, non smoking room was $117.00.  The rooms are clean and the linens are new and crisp.  There is Wi-Fi available, but I would suggest you only use it to check your email or look up directions.  We tried to watch a video; I wanted to rip my hair out.  There are the usual items available; coffee pot, iron, blow dryer etc.

If you are traveling with children there is a bath tub in addition to the shower and there is a swimming pool as well.  Since my traveling companion has ruined my love of swimming pools with his explanation that they are nothing but cesspools of human waste and bacteria I did not check out the pool but there were many families on the way to and from and all seemed happy.  I was envious of their joyous naivety.

There is a piano bar style restaurant in the lobby and will be about your only dining choice in walking distance.  While I love Johnstown because it is so not Pittsburgh, there is not much to do after dark in the downtown area.  You will need to drive 5 – 7 miles to Scalp Avenue to find the strip malls and restaurants.

If you are looking for a nice, centrally located place to stay near the Johnstown attractions (Incline, War Memorial, Flood Memorial etc...) this is it.

I hope you enjoy your stay as I have.

This isn't the high efficiency washer I have been looking for!
